How To Install A New Mazda Windscreen

Replacing a damaged or old windscreen is a critical maintenance task that not only enhances the appearance of your Mazda but also ensures your safety. This guide will walk you through how to install a new windscreen correctly and safely.

Prepare the Area

Before you start, make sure your Mazda is in a shaded, dry area to prevent premature drying of the sealant. Clean the frame where the new windscreen will fit, removing any debris, old adhesive, and rust. The surface should be smooth and clean to ensure a strong bond with the new adhesive.

Remove the Old Windscreen

Start by removing any trims or clips around the existing windscreen with a trim removal tool. Carefully cut through the adhesive that holds the windscreen in place, using a windscreen removal tool. It’s important to wear safety gloves and goggles during this process to protect yourself from glass shards.

Prepare the New Windscreen

Before installing the new windscreen, it must be prepared properly. Clean the glass thoroughly with a glass cleaner to remove any fingerprints, dust, or contaminants. Apply a primer on the areas where the adhesive will be applied, both on the windscreen and the frame of the car, to enhance the bonding process.

Apply the Adhesive

Use a high-quality urethane adhesive for the installation. Cut the tip of the adhesive applicator to match the width of the original bead. Apply a continuous, even bead of adhesive around the perimeter of the frame, making sure there are no gaps or air pockets.

Install the Windscreen

Carefully lift the new windscreen and set it in place on the frame. It’s best to have an assistant help you to avoid damaging the glass or misaligning it. Once positioned, press the windscreen gently but firmly into the adhesive to ensure it is evenly seated.

Check Alignment and Seal

Ensure that the windscreen is properly aligned with the frame of your Mazda. Check that the gap between the windscreen and the frame is even all around. Adjust as necessary before the adhesive sets. Once satisfied with the alignment, use a rubber roller or your hands to press around the edges of the windscreen to improve the seal and adherence to the adhesive.

Reattach Components

Reattach any trims, clips, or wipers that were removed. Make sure everything is securely in place and that there are no loose parts.

Allow Time to Cure

Allow the adhesive to cure according to the manufacturer's instructions, usually between one to several hours. Avoid driving the car during this time to ensure the adhesive sets properly without any shifts in the windscreen’s position.

Test the Installation

Once the adhesive has cured, it’s important to check the installation. Ensure there are no leaks by gently pouring water over the windscreen and checking for any water entering the vehicle.
